Here’s a picture of the Garden Of Eden from the Creation Museum near Petersburg, Kentucky. This commercially run ‘theme park’ presents a ‘scientific’ account of creation literally as it is described in The Bible, claiming that the earth is no more than 6,000 years old and that dinosaurs lived with men and were wiped out in the biblical flood, except of course those dinosaurs that Noah took onto the Ark.
This is U.S. capitalism and Christian fundamentalism combining in a beautiful synthesis! “Sure, we want to promote our Bronze Age creation myth as fact, while simultaneously trying to undermine the credibility of legitimate scientific inquiry, but, hell, we want to make a buck while we do it; it’s the American way. Yeeha!”
American global cultural imperialism has been so successful that U.S. social mores and customs seem entirely ‘normal’ to huge numbers of people throughout the world. Indeed, the economic, consumer and social ‘norms’ that most people aspire to are almost entirely defined by U.S. TV & cinema – even in America itself where 40 million Americans live below the poverty line and have no access to health care and the average annual paid holiday for those in work is 2 weeks.
English children now regularly engage in ‘trick or treat’ at Halloween; after O-Levels nearly all English school kids now have a ‘prom”; the slang of U.S. kids is ubiquitous amongst English youth. It is almost as if the UK is the 51st State of the Union. But why on earth would we want to part of that lunatic asylum!?
Hollywood movies promote the idea that when a giant meteor is careering towards earth, or alien invaders land, or the earth’s crust starts melting, it will be the U.S. President and armed services that will save the world. And yet the reality is that the U.S. couldn’t even get 10,000 people out of New Orleans after a flood partially caused by the countries decaying infrastructure. On my own visits to the U.S. I am not struck by their vibrant economy and wonderful consumer culture, on the contrary, I am amazed at the appalling condition of the highways, the lack of a coherent infrastructure and the ugliness of a world plastered by advertising slogans on every available surface.
The U.S. has illegally and violently intervened in the internal affairs of most countries in the world, not in support of freedom and equality as is so often claimed, but in the ruthless pursuit of it’s own economic interests. Certainly since WWII, the U.S. has systematically supported dictators and tyrants across the globe, (most famously Saddam Hussain in Iraq and The Mujahideen in Afghanistan), and purposefully undermined or even assassinated democratically elected leaders (most famously Allende in Chile).
And to cap it all 50% of Americans don’t believe in evolution and believe that the world was created in 7 days by God, literally as it is described in the Bible.
Now, don’t get me wrong I think the UK government is quite right in trying to maintain a ‘special relationship’ with these nutters; let’s face it if your next door neighbour is a violent psychopathic religious maniac who is talking to God on a regular basis, you don’t want to get into a slanging match with them, best to smile a lot and agree with everything they say.
So to our American cousins I would just like to say God Bless Yawl, have a happy, happy Xmas and hope to see ya at the Rapture.
