Austerity in a nutshell

Austerity isn’t a stoic process. It’s a radical humiliation, materially and psychologically, of everything one has been conditioned to know.

It’s a punishment on those who believed the myth, who bought into the system, who didn’t realise they were living a civilisation flaw. A job, the basic promise of the industrial world in exchange for the forfeited commons, gone. Education the great elixir of progress and hope of the masses, cut. Health clinics, our benevolent commitment to the well-being of others, closed. Conspicuous consumption, the empty vault of pleasure, bankrupt. Pensions, the great storehouse of a life’s worth, erased with the scratch of an IMF pen. Future, career, family… Unimaginable.
