Un-Be-fucking-lievable!!!!

images_eWhen single mother Natalie Gunshannon went to get her first paycheck from her new job at McDonald’s, she was in for a shock — McDonald’s gave Natalie her salary on a debit card that came with ridiculous hidden charges, like forcing her to pay $5 every time she withdraws her money at her bank.

What’s more, when Natalie asked for a check, McDonald’s refused, saying she had to take the card — and the charges — or not take any money at all. This scheme allows her local franchise operator to save a few dollars from the cost of cutting checks by making deals with big banks that force employees to use fee-laden cards. In many cases, the high costs push workers’ hourly pay below minimum wage.

Tell McDonald’s to ban the practice of forcing employees to be paid with fee-laden debit cards.

The practice of replacing checks with expensive cards is gaining ground with employers. This practice saves businesses money and allows banks to charge ridiculous sums — Natalie was forced to pay $15 to replace her card if she ever lost it. Employers know that they won’t have to pay the high fees, because their employees will be the ones charged.

This is abuse of employer privileges, pure and simple, telling workers that they have no choice but to accept unfair charges or go hungry. Employers are forcing this upon their workers because in a bad economy, they don’t think workers have a choice to speak up — even though the practice is illegal.

If we band together to call out businesses that engage in this horrendous practice, we can send a powerful message to anyone who tries to push outlandish charges onto their employees that this will not be tolerated. Together, we can stop this practice before it becomes widespread.

Sign our petitions to McDonald’s: get rid of these exploitative debit cards.

And so unfettered Capitalism takes us back to payment by ‘Scrip’, whereby workers are paid in tokens, rather than money, and tokens that can only be redeemed at the company store or only converted into cash at a reduced exchange rate. This was a feature of the West Virginia and Tennessee coal fields as recently as the 1950’s but was finally discontinued around 1952.

Anyone who still argues that Capitalism is beneficial to all needs to wake up and smell the burger grease. Payment by scrip results in employees being locked into a relationship with their employer that amounts to slavery. There is no chance of ‘saving’ or of buying your own home or even of leaving the employer to find better work (the moral foundation of the supposedly equal contract between employee and employer) because the paltry assets the worker has are literally tied to the company.

I hope to God American workers have the sense and balls to fight this because if a multi-national corporation like McDonalds gets away with this we are all fucked.

  1. I signed the petition and I hope that many others do as well. A scary “Stephen King“ clown is an appropriate representative for McDonald’s. I always thought that a creepy clown was an unwise choice for a marketing tool ever since McDonald’s management adopted it years ago. Since ground beef is the predominant menu item, McDonald’s should instead feature a happy cow as its symbol and its slogan should be “Eat Me.” Hamburger patties should instead be referred to as cow patties and customers should be asked how many cow patties they’d like to have between their buns.
